An issue with burning hoverboards sold on Amazon is quit a serious problem, but according to NBCnews.com Amazon knows that and that’s why they are giving refunds on every hoverboard sold on their site.
“I am pleased that at least one leading retailer is erring on the side of caution and taking action now,” Elliot Kaye, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said in a statement.
It´s not obvious why they give the full refunds voluntary, but they do – And it might be a matter of showing a good behavior, so that people will come back and buy on Amazon again.
The reason why the hoverboards catch fire is not certain, but it´s most likely a matter of faulty wiring and the lithium-ion batteries, according to the CPSC, something that should be preventable.
“There are certain basic safety technologies we expect these units to have that should prevent overheating and potential combustion,” Kaye said. “These are the same readily-available technologies that exist in properly manufactured lithium-ion batteries used in the notebook computers and cell phones we all use every day.”
